Women's Volleyball Drops Nailbiter

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's volleyball team forced Northeastern to a 17-15 victory in the fourth game to decide the match as the Huskies defeated the Eagles 3-1 (10-15, 15-5, 15-10, 17-15) Wednesday in Chestnut Hill. Northeastern improved to 8-6 after defeating Providence College Tuesday while BC fell to 5-8.
The Huskies were led by Lindsay Wagner (Beaverton, Ore.) and Kristin Deatherage (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who each put forth 16-kill performances. Wagner also accumulated a game-high 28 digs while Deatherage's 21-dig effort rated second defensively. Lisa Nolan made 54 assists for the win.
For the second consecutive game Julia El Hag (Bedford, NY/Fox Lane) and Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) paced the Eagles, gaining 13 and 10 kills, respectively. El-Hag led the team defensively as well, totaling 18 digs. Setter Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) registered 42 helpers in addition to her 17 digs. Mary Fitterer (Puyallup, Wash./Fife) also gained a stellar 15 digs.
In the first game, Fitterer's two-dig sequence from the floor sparked an Eagle sideout and seven-point run with Charlton serving to take the 10-3 lead. The Huskies crept within four at 14-10 before the Eagles landed the final blow for game point.
Northeastern regrouped to take game two. Kelly Cognac (Los Garos, Calif.) served the Huskies to three points before exchanging serves at 13-4. BC scored one more point thereafter falling 15-5. On fire, the Huskies ripped off seven points in game three, led by Catherine Baker (Bethesda, Md.) , whose strong serving yielded five points. The Eagles did not give up, climbing to within three at 13-10 before finally surrendering the 15-10 decision.
BC rolled to a 4-0 advantage in the final game. The Huskies tied the game at seven and again at 11. BC denied two match points before creating their own match point opportunities but finally fell 15-17.
Two BIG EAST opponents come to town this weekend to kick off conference play. St. John's visits BC Saturday (Oct. 2) at 7 p.m. then Connecticut rides in the very next day, Game time is at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
