Boston College captured its first BIG EAST victory of the season, blanking homestanding Villanova 2-0 in a game played Sunday in Villanova, Pa. The win was the Eagles? third in a row and first road triumph of the 1999 campaign.
The Eagles? offensive was supplied by freshmen as Zach Bouchard (Belmont, N.H.) and Bob Thompson (Framingham, Mass.) who scored less than seven minutes apart to give Boston College a 2-0 halftime edge. The goals were the first of their careers, as Thompson was playing his first college game. Newcomer Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.) assisted on Bouchard?s tally while junior Chris Cleary (Milton, Mass.) helped Thompson find the back of the net.
Boston College goalkeeper Chris Hamblin (Bristol, England) recorded five saves before receiving a red card in the 59th minute. Junior John O?Holloran (Waltham, Mass.), seeing the first action of his collegiate career, came through for the Eagles stopping three shots in the last 31 minutes to preserve the victory.
Boston College will continue the BIG EAST portion of its schedule by hosting Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
