CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's volleyball team (5-4) penned its third consecutive victory, handing the University of Hartford (4-4) a 3-0 loss Wednesday in Chestnut Hill.
Freshman Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), coming off an All-Tournament performance at the New England Invitational last weekend, stroked 16 kills with nine digs. That effort marked her fourth double-digit kill sum in the past five matches and was her second best offensive production (17) of the year.
BC junior Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) posted 10 kills, 2.5 blocks while serving three aces. She now averages .323 hitting percentage, 0.86 blocks per game with 0.51 aces per game. Classmate Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) amassed 43 assists with 12 digs while teammate Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) bettered Charlton's dig total by one with a team-leading 13.
Kristen Ruffner (Long Beach, Calif./The Knox School) was the only Hawk to hit kills in double figures, gaining 11 tonight. Erin Meyer (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) tabbed 31 assists, and Marisa Vino (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) had 18 digs defensively for Hartford.
Boston College controlled most of game one, tagging the 15-9 victory. The Eagles started to pull away after leading Hartford 8-6 in the second game. Strong serving by Rachel Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles) and Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat), whose stints behind the line saw the Eagles win six points, helped BC to the 15-7 favorable decision.
The Hawks flew to a 3-0 lead in the third, until Mary Fitterer (Puyallup, Wash./Fife) served BC to the equalizing and go-ahead point. The Eagles never looked back, allowing only five points thereafter en route to the 15-8 game and match win.
Boston College travels to the Indiana University Tournament Sept. 17-18 in Bloomington.
