CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Playing a home game for the first time in seven years, the Boston College men's soccer team took care of visiting Army 3-0 in front of an estimated 400 enthusiastic fans at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The game marked the first time a competitive game was played on the field, which will serve as the home field for both the men's and women's soccer programs at Boston College.
Freshman Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.), will forever hold the distinction of being the first player to tally a goal on the field. Schmidt scored 32:48 into the match on a feed from Chris Cleary (Milton, Mass.). Seven minutes later Schmidt was at it again, taking a cross from Cleary and putting the ball into an open Army goal much to the approval of the crowd.
Boston College (2-2), which outshot its visitors from the Empire State 15-3, would score its third goal as Paul Bourke (Cork, Ireland) fed a charging Cleary who put the ball past Army goalkeeper Kevin J. Smith.
The shutout was the Eagles' first blanking of the 1999 season and first since Oct. 16 of last season when Boston College held Villanova scoreless in a 3-0 victory.
The Eagles will resume BIG EAST competition with a game against Rutgers to be played Friday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Scarlet Knights' Yurcak Field.
