CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College women's volleyball team earned its second consecutive victory, downing the University of Portland 3-1 (15-11, 16-14, 6-15, 15-12) at the New England Invitational Sunday at Power Gym. The Eagles improved their record to 500 (4-4) while serving the Pilots (0-5) their fifth straight loss.
Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) led BC with a strong all-around performance. She gained 12 kills, 15 digs, two assists, one service ace and 2.5 blocks. Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) delivered double-digit kills (11) for the sixth time this season. With today's effort, she is now hitting .326 for the year in addition to augmenting her team-leading 0.47 service aces per game average with four today.
Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) collected 48 assists against the Pilots for a tournament total of 162 in three games. The junior setter also served five aces and registered 15 digs. Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./ Fox Lane) tied a personal best total of 24 digs.
Freshman Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) added 10 kills with 14 digs for the Eagles.
Five Pilots hit kills in the double figures, led by Christy Novitsky's (Portland, Ore./Madison) 15 in addition to a 17-dig effort. Bridget DeChant (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) had 13 kills with a team-high 20 digs while Bridget Beschen (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and Cheyanne Mortek (Brush Prairie, Wash./Brush Prairie) tallied 11 kills each.
The Eagles closed an 8-11 gap in the first game to tie and eventually win on the strength of Kyleen Charlton's five service aces and the Eagles' seven consecutive game points.
BC trailed most of the second game until DeLong served the Eagles to a 13-14 deficit. Schwer delivered a crucial kill to fight off the Pilots' game point opportunity and give Boston College a sideout. With Rachel Bach serving, Schwer contributed three kills to win the game.
In game three, Portland's Novitsky served Portland to four game points, lifting the Pilots to a 14-5 lead over the Eagles, who then lost 15-6.
Boston College held on for the 15-12 win in the fourth game, stifling a late-game surge from the Pilots, coming within one point at 13-12.
BC hosts Hartford at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Power Gym.
