Boston College Falls To St. Peter's, 3-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - The Saint Peter's volleyball team defeated opponents University of Portland and host Boston College in five games each at the New England Invitational Saturday in Chestnut Hill. The Peahens defeated Portland 15-10, 7-15, 9-15, 15-2, 15-9 in the morning then conquered the Eagles 15-10, 9-15, 11-15, 16-14 and 15-7 in the 1 p.m. match. They rose to 2-1 overall, handing Boston College its fourth defeat in six matches and Portland's fourth loss in as many appearances.
Saint Peter's was led by Valentina Zaharieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Georgi Benkovski) and Yvette Lozanski (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who each accumulated 22 kills against the Eagles and combined for 32 of the Peahens' 62 kills versus the Pilots. Lozanski's 45-dig day led all players while Zaharieva registered a total of 38 in the tournament so far. Setter Amee Carothers (Auburn, Wash./Fife) notched 43 assists in the first match then added 49 more helpers against the Eagles.
Despite the 3-2 loss, many Eagles flew to career highs today. Junior Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) posted a personal best 20 kills and seven block assists. She has hit double-digit totals for kills in five matches this season.
Teammate setter Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) tied a career-high with her 65 assists today. Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) was one shy of a personal best mark, digging out 23 balls, although, she did give a season best performance of 15 kills. Co-captain Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) put forth a personal best defensive effort, leading all Eagles with 19 digs. Freshman Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) registered a season best 17 kills in addition to 18 digs.
Cheyanne Mortek (Brush Prairie, Wash./Prairie) topped all Portland Pilots with her eight kills. Defensively, Bridget Breschen (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) had 10 digs.
This morning, Saint Peter's won the first match over Portland before suffering two losses in the next two games to the Pilots. The Peahens then regained their composure to win 15-2 in the fourth as Zaharieva served Saint Peter's to nine straight points, forcing a game five.
After fighting off 15 game points, the Eagles finally fell 11-15 to Saint Peter's in the first game, then took the next two games 15-9 and 15-11. With DeLong serving in the fourth game, BC tied the game at 14 but would fall 14-16 . The Peahens ended with a 15-7 advantage in rally points to win the match.
New England Invitational competition resumes tonight when Boston College entertains Harvard at 7 p.m.
