Oregon Spoils Eagles Volleyball Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The University of Oregon (1-0) volleyball team defeated host Boston College (0-1) 3-1 (16-14, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7) in both teams' season-opening match before 325 people Wednesday night at Power Gym.
Monique Tobaggi (San Jose, Calif/Archbishop Mitty) and Halie Mazza (Hood River, Ore./Hood River) led Oregon offensively, completing 13 kills apiece. Sophomore setter Julie Gerlach (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) assisted on 34 kills while Amy Banducci (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) and Annie Pogue (Campbell, Calif./Del Mar) each collected 14 digs.
Both junior Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) and freshman Rachel Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles) contributed double-digit figures in kills for the Eagles. Sprinkel topped her teammates with her 12 while Bach, in her first collegiate game, had 10 kills. Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) added a team-leading 44 assists and 22 digs. Sophomore Brooke Shull (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) served a game-high four aces.
Oregon takes Thursday off before facing Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m. Friday (Sept. 3) at the New Hampshire Tournament in Durham, N.H. Boston College plays Wofford College at 7 p.m. Friday (Sept. 3) at the Northeastern Tournament in Boston.
