CHESTNUT HILL - Boston College has signed head hockey coach Jerry York to a new five-year contract, according to an announcement made by athletic director Gene DeFilippo. The contract will run through the 2003-2004 season.
"Jerry York is an outstanding human being and a great hockey coach. He exemplifies all the best qualities of intercollegiate athletics," DeFilippo said. "I couldn't be happier with what he has done with our hockey program. I'm certain that, under Jerry's leadership, our success on the ice will continue."
The sixth all-time winningest coach in college hockey history with 564 wins, York recently completed his fifth season as head coach at Boston College. In his BC tenure, York has a 97-79-18 record. He has led Boston College to two consecutive HOCKEY EAST Tournament titles (1998 and 1999) and back-to-back berths in the NCAA Tournament's Frozen Four. Boston College lost to Michigan, 3-2 in overtime, in the 1998 national championship game.
Just prior to arriving at Boston College, York spent 15 years - 1979-94 - as the head coach at Bowling Green State University. There he led the Falcons to four CCHA regular-season titles; one CCHA tournament title; and six NCAA Tournament berths. In 1983-84, he guided BGSU to the national championship. At Bowling Green, he had a 342-248-31 record.
York began his coaching career at Clarkson. He assumed the head job at age 26, becoming the youngest head coach in the nation. In seven years - 1972-79 - with the Golden Knights, York registered a 125-87-3 mark.
A 1967 graduate of Boston College, York was a three-year letterman for the Eagles. He earned All-America first team honors as a senior. He also captured the 1966-67 Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in New England. #######
