Women's Track Begins Spring Season

The Boston College Women's track team opened the 1999 outdoor season with a third place finish at the Husky Open held at the University of Connecticut on April 3. The field included teams from the University of Rhode Island, University of Albany, the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, and Providence College. Also held the same day was a dual meet between Boston College and Providence College which BC won, 100-23.
Sophomore Lisa McIsaac (Edmonton, Alberta) competed in the 3000m and won the race with a time of 9:51.87. Finishing in second was sophomore Shannon Smith (Fairport, NY) with a time of 9:58.62.
Freshman Meghan Cunniff (Monmouth Beach, NJ) won her race in the 800m with a time of 2:19.43. She also placed second in the 1500m (4:45.21). Junior Marcia Furr (Dorchester, MA) finished second in the 400m (58.59).
In the field events, sophomore Kristyn OBrien (Woburn, MA) placed second in the pole vault with a height of 8'6". OBrien returned to competition after breaking a bone in her foot early in the indoor season. Sophomore Kate Sullivan (Randolph, MA) finished third in the long jump (163.25"). Jamie Shinn (Wethersfield, CT) placed the triple jump (33'2").
Earlier this season, members of the track team traveled to Raleigh, NC to compete in the Raleigh Relays. Freshman Sharon VanTuyl (Portage, MI) placed third in the 3000m run with a time of 9:50.19. Her race was comprised of 65 runners. Smith ran to a fifth-place finish in the 5000m (17:09.74) in the field of 77. The 4x1500m relay team finished third in a field that included 15 teams.
The Eagles will next compete at the Tufts Invitational hosted by Tufts University on April 10.
