Women's Basketball shoots down Rockets

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The Boston College womens basketball team overcame a six-point deficit with just over three minutes left in regulation to defeat the University of Toledo 72-69. The win upped the Eagles record to a perfect 5-0, the best start in school history.
Junior co-captain Cal Bouchard (Aurora, Ontario) overcame a tough first half shooting performance (3-for-10) and hit two key free throws with 1:23 left in the game to give Boston College a 68-67 lead. After a Toledo miss, Bouchard hit a jump shot to up the Eagle lead to three. Toledos Shaunda Roberts cut the lead to one on a jump shot. The Rockets then sent Boston College to the line three different times, and the Eagles missed on all three attempts. Yet senior co-captain Paula Bacso (Farmingdale, NY) grabbed the rebound on the final miss and put it back in to seal the Eagles victory.
Senior Whitney Steele (Harrington Park, NJ) finished the game with a season high 24 points, one point off of her career high. Steele scored 13 of those points in the second half, helping Boston College overcome a 42-33 deficit with over 19 minutes left in the second half. The Eagles went on an 11-0 run, capped by a Steele lay-up to take their first lead of the game. The two teams battled back and forth, with the Rockets leading by as much as six twice during the second period, the final time at the 3:14 mark.
Toledo led the entire first period. The Rockets were on fire from outside the three-point arc, shooting 53.8 percent (7-for-13). The Eagles trailed by as many as 13, down 30-17 with 7:26 left in the first period. Toledo senior Kim Knuth led all first half scorers with 13 points. Knuth finished the game with 24 points.
Boston College next faces St. Josephs in a 2:00 pm home contest on Sunday, Nov. 29. Sundays game is the second to last home game of 1998. The Eagles face Notre Dame at home on December 30.
