Mottau Captures Hockey MVP Honors

CHESNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) earned the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award as the 1998-99 Boston College hockey team's Most Valuable Player. The award was presented at the 50th annual Boston College Pike's Peak Club Banquet at Lantana in Randolph, Mass.
Senior defenseman Brendan Buckley (Needham, Mass./Needham) captured the John A. "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award, given annually to the player whose play and character best typify Boston College hockey.
Senior forward Chris Masters (Lexington, Mass/Matignon) earned the James E. Tiernan Memorial Award as the team's Most Improved Player, while senior forwards Matt Mulhern (Havertown, Penn./Canterbury School) and Nick Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn./Salisbury School) shared the William J. Flynn Coaches' Award.
Mottau, who finished his junior season with 42 points, earned Titan All-America honors for the second consecutive season. The Thayer Academy graduate captured first team All-America accolades this season, after being a second-team selection one year ago. He ranked among the nation's leaders with 39 assists this season.
Buckley, who tallied 14 points this season while anchoring the team's defensive effort, finished his collegiate career tied atop the school's career games played list. Both he and Kevin Stevens '87 played in 158 games.
Masters rounded out his collegiate career with a 39-point season, more than doubling his previous season's point total. Both his 16 goals and 23 assists were personal single-season bests. Masters recently played in the US-Canada North American Hockey Championship, a two-game series featuring collegiate all-stars from the two countries. The games were played in Detroit and Toronto. Masters netted a shootout goal in the tie-breaking session of the second game.
Mulhern, who played in 157 games during his BC career, finished the 1998-99 season with 11 points four goals and seven assists.
Pierandri registered 13 points in his final season. Included among his three goals were two game-winning tallies.
Led by head coach Jerry York, Boston College finished the 1998-99 season with a 27-12-4 record, capturing the HOCKEY EAST Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament's "Frozen Four". BC lost to Maine, 2-1 in overtime, in a semifinal-round contest.
