WORCESTER, Mass. - Guard Monty Mack scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as Massachusetts ran away from Boston College early and went on to a 75-45 victory in the Commonwealth Classic on Saturday.
The victory for UMass-Amherst (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak. Boston College (2-6) has lost four in a row.
Mack ended 8-for-14 from the field and 5-for-10 from 3-point territory. Backing him up was Chris Kirkland with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Brian Ross had 12 points, with Michael Cotton and Kenny Walls getting eight apiece for the Eagles, who have lost the last five meetings with UMass.
UMass scored 10 straight points, with Mack getting the last eight, to vault the Minutemen into a 16-4 advantage in the first eight minutes. By the midway mark of the half, Massachusetts was ahead 22-9, and at halftime the advantage had swelled to 37-18.
UMass shot 52 percent from the field in the first half, compared to BC's 25 percent. The Minutemen were playing without second-leading scorer Lari Ketner, who was suspended for one game for violating a team rule.
