Men's Hockey Soars Over River Hawks, 7-3

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Junior forward Jeff Farkas registered his first collegiate hat trick to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 7-3 win over UMass-Lowell in its HOCKEY EAST opener at Kelley Rink.
Junior forward Andy Powers netted two goals for the Eagles, while sophomore defenseman Bobby Allen added three assists.
Boston College jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period and extended the margin to 6-0 early in the second period, before UMass-Lowell scored its first goal. The visiting River Hawks scored three consecutive goals, including one power-play goal and one short-handed goal, to cut the Eagles advantage in half. BCs Farkas scored his third goal of the game -- on the power play -- at 7:27 of the final period to conclude the scoring.
BC scored three goals in the games first five minutes to gain control. Powers netted his first goal of the season at 1:10; Farkas doubled the margin at 4:23; and Powers added his second goal at 4:57. Junior Blake Bellefeuilles power-play goal at 13:24 wrapped up the first-period scoring.
Junior Kevin Caulfield continued the Eagle assault with a goal at 2:53 of the middle stanza, and Farkas added the teams sixth score at 4:32. UMass-Lowell got untracked on senior Anthony Cappellettis power-play goal at 5:27. Freshman forward Yorick Treilles unassisted tally at 7:06 made the score, 6-2, and senior Doug Nolan netted a short-handed goal at 11:39 to pull the River Hawks to within three goals.
BC sophomore netminder Scott Clemmensen made 20 saves to earn his third win in as many games. UMass-Lowell senior Scott Fankhouser made three saves (9:31), while freshman Jimi St. John made 29 saves (50:29).
BC and UMass-Lowell will meet again on Saturday, October 31 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Game time is 7 p.m.

Jeff Farkas, with his first career hat trick, notched the 22nd mutiple point game of his career, tying him for the team lead with classmate Blake Bellefeuille ...
