CHESTNUT HILL - Sophomore forward Sean MacDonald's goal 18 seconds into the overtime period capped a Northeastern comeback as the visiting Huskies defeated top-ranked Boston College, 5-4, before a crowd of 6,545 fans in Kelley Rink.
The Huskies' win avenges an overtime loss to Merrimack just three nights earlier. Merrimack needed just eight seconds in the extra period to defeat the Huskies.
Boston College junior Jeff Farkas' power-play goal 57 seconds into the third period gave BC a 4-2 advantage, before Northeastern began to rally. Junior Bobby Davis trimmed the BC margin to one goal with a man-advantage goal at 4:46. Junior Roger Holeczy evened the score with a 4-on-4 goal at 17:29, forcing an extra session and setting the stage for MacDonald's gamewinner.
Boston College (4-1-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore Bobby Allen opened the scoring at 3:20; sophomore Rob Scuderi doubled the lead at 10:56; and senior Andy Powers added the third score at 17:53. Northeastern (3-4-0) got on the board on sophomore Matt Brown's goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first period.
Northeastern sophomore Graig Mischler scored the only goal of the second period.
BC sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 25 saves, while NU freshman Scott Sutton earned the win with 24 stops.
Boston College and Northeastern meet in the second half of the home-and-home series on Saturday, November 14. Game time is 7 p.m. in Matthews Arena.
