CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Boyd Ballard made 36 saves and his teammates registered three third-period goals as Providence defeated Boston College, 3-0, before a crowd of 7,653 in BCs Kelley Rink.
The victory vaults Providence into a third-place tie with Boston College in the HOCKEY EAST standings. Both teams are now 8-5-0 in league play.
The shutout was the Friars first this season. It was Boyds second career shutout.
The two teams battled back and forth - without a goal - for two periods, before PC freshman Drew Omicioli broke the deadlock at 4:11 of the final stanza. Senior Troy Lake doubled the Friars lead with a power-play goal at 8:02. Junior Doug Sheppard finished the scoring at 18:40.
Boston College sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 25 saves.
Boston College and Providence meet in the second game of the series on Saturday, January 23 at PCs Schneider Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
