Orono, Maine - Maine's Matthias Trattnig broke a 4-4 tie with his goal at 14:18 of the third period that lifted the Black Bears to a 6-4 win over Boston College in front of 5,587 fans at Alfond Arena.
Junior Kevin Caulfield netted one goal and added two assists to lead the Eagles. Sophomore Bobby Allen tallied one goal and one assist while senior Chris Masters notched two assists for BC.
Boston College scored first when Caulfield slid a shot under the legs of Maine goalie Alfie Michaud at 11:07 of the first period. Caulfield's goal was set up perfectly by an one-armed pass from the corner by Masters.
Maine tied the game 21 seconds into the second period before sophomore Bobby Allen recaptured the lead for the Eagles at 4:06 of the middle stanza. On the power play, Allen blasted a shot from just inside the blue line that passed to the right of Michaud and gave BC a one-goal advantage.
Sophomore Brian Gionta increased the lead to 3-1 with a highlight-reel tally 53 seconds after Allen's goal. The Hobey Baker candidate took a pass from classmate Marty Hughes and exploded into the offensive zone. He used a 360 to beat Maine defenseman Robert Ek and then faked right, went left, and lifted a backhand shot over the sprawling Michaud.
The Black Bears would respond with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead, before senior Brendan Buckley tallied his first goal of the season. Buckley penetrated deep into the offensive zone and converted on a scramble in front of the net.
Trattnig would score the gamewinner and Jim Leger added an empty-net goal to finish the scoring.
Sophomore Scott Clemmensen made 31 saves for the Eagles, while Maine's Alfie Michaud made 23 stops.
The Eagles return to action on Friday, February 19 when they travel to Tsongas Arena to battle HOCKEY EAST foe, UMass-Lowell.
