CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Jeff Farkas and sophomore forward Brian Gionta each tallied two goals and one assist to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 6-4 HOCKEY EAST victory over UMass-Lowell at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.
Sophomore defenseman Mike Mottau tallied four assists on the first four goals. Senior forward Andy Powers and sophomore defenseman Bobby Allen each notched one goal and one assist.
The Eagles started strong with two first-period goals. Gionta began the scoring at 8:34 when he powered home a rebound from an Allen shot. Farkas gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at 11:47 with his wrist shot past the River Hawks freshman goalkeeper, Jimi St. John.
UMass-Lowell stormed back to tie the game with two second-period goals. Senior defenseman Anthony Cappelletti cut the Eagle lead in half with his goal at 6:37, and junior defenseman Kevin Bertram netted the equalizer four minutes later.
BC regained the lead when Farkas tallied his second goal of the game, fifth of the weekend series, 53 seconds into the final period. Sophomore defenseman Marty Hughes notched his first goal of the season 20 seconds later to give BC a 4-2 advantage. Both goals came on the power play.
After Doug Nolan cut the lead to 4-3, Powers knocked the puck through St. John's pads and into the net. Gionta scored BC's final goal 13 seconds later when he redirected a shot from senior forward Chris Masters into the net. River Hawk freshman Tom Rouleau finished the scoring with his goal at 18:30 of the third period.
BC sophomore netminder Scott Clemmensen made 24 saves to earn his fourth win in as many games. St. John made 29 saves (59:40) for the River Hawks.
The Eagles return to action on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. when they host Notre Dame in Kelley Rink. The two teams will play on the eve of the annual football clash.
