Men's Hockey Defeats UMass-Lowell, 5-4

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College sophomore Brian Gionta tallied one goal and three assists to lead the Eagles to a 5-4 win against UMass-Lowell in game two of the quarterfinal round of the HOCKEY EAST tournament.
With the victory, the Eagles (23-11-4) captured the best-of-three series - two wins to zero wins - from the River Hawks and advanced to the semifinal round of the HOCKEY EAST tournament. Gionta notched three goals and four assists in the two-game series.
The River Hawks (17-19-0) grabbed an early lead when Brad Rooney scored just 1:07 into the game. Boston College senior Andy Powers tied the game with his goal at 7:48 of the opening period.
UMass-Lowell regained the lead at 10:53 of the first period and held the 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes of action. The Eagles tallied two second-period goals to capture the lead for good.
Junior Blake Bellefeuille scored his 20th goal of the season at 5:44 of the second period and Gionta netted his 25th goal of the season with 42 seconds remaining in the middle stanza to give BC a 3-2 lead.
The Eagles increased their lead to 5-2 with goals by sophomore Bobby Allen and junior Jeff Farkas. UMass-Lowell closed the gap to 5-4 with two power-play goals in the third period, but could not tally the game-tying goal.
Boston College sophomore Scott Clemmensen made 14 saves. UMass-Lowells Jimi St. John made 20 stops in 47:27 minutes of work before being relieved by Scott Fankhouser who made three third-period saves.
Boston College will return to action on Friday, March 19 in the semifinal round of the HOCKEY EAST tournament.
