CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College sophomore Brian Gionta netted two goals, including the gamewinner, and added two assists to lead the Eagles in a 7-1 win over UMass-Amherst at BCs Kelley Rink.
Both Gionta and junior Blake Bellefeuille entered the game with 99 career points. With his second-period goal, Gionta earned his 100th career point. Bellefeuille achieved the mark when he openend the games scoring with a short-handed goal at 7:30 of the first period. Bellefeuille added another goal and one assist.
After Bellefeuille gave the Eagles (15-8-2, 10-5-0 HOCKEY EAST) a one-goal lead, Gionta tallied his sixth power-play goal of the season at the 8:13 mark of the second period. The Eagles went ahead 3-0 when senior Chris Masters blistered a shot past the UMass-Amherst goalie with five minutes remaining in the middle stanza. Gionta notched his second goal of the night 50 seconds later.
Junior Kevin Caulfield put the Eagles ahead 5-0 with 55 seconds remaining in the second period. The Minutemen (6-15-2, 3-10-2 HOCKEY EAST) scored their lone goal of the game when R.J. Gates deflected a shot past BC goaltender, Scott Clemmensen, at the 7:33 mark of the final period. Bellefeuille and senior Andy Powers finished the scoring with two third-period goals.
Clemmensen made 12 saves in 52:40 before being relieved by senior Mike Correia who made seven saves. UMass-Amhersts Markus Helanen made 20 saves in 40 minutes of work. Mike Johnson finished the game for the Minutemen, making 16 stops in the final period.
The Eagles will return to HOCKEY EAST action when they face UMass-Amherst on Friday, January 26. Game time is 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
