Men's Hockey Defeats UMass-Amherst, 5-4, in Overtime

CHESTNUT HILL - Freshman defenseman Brooks Orpik's goal at 2:40 of overtime capped a Boston College rally from a three-goal deficit as the host Eagles defeated UMass-Amherst, 5-4, in a HOCKEY EAST contest before a crowd of 5,889 in BCs Kelley Rink.
The goal was the first of Orpik's collegiate career.
Boston College (17-9-2) trailed 4-1 midway through the second period, before freshman Ales Dolinar netted his second collegiate goal at 12:38 of the middle period to bring the Eagles to within two goals.
Junior defenseman Mike Mottau cut the UMass margin to 4-3 at 16:06 of the third period, setting the stage for junior forward Blake Bellefeuille's game-tying tally with just 2:01 remaining in regulation.
UMass (6-17-2) led 3-0 after one period. Freshman Darcy King opened the scoring at 7:09, and sophomore Ray Geever doubled the Minutemen advantage with a power-play goal at 10:59. Sophomore Jeff Turner finished the period's scoring, netting his sixth goal of the season with just 26 seconds remaining before the first intermission.
Sophomore Brian Gionta got BC on the scoreboard with his 19th goal of the season, a power-play tally at 3:03 of the second period. UMass sophomore defenseman Joey Culgin gave UMass a 4-1 lead at 8:56.
UMass freshman Mike Johnson made 36 stops, including five in the overtime session. Boston College sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 18 saves.
Boston College returns to action on Monday, February 5 against Harvard in the consolation round of the 47th annual Beanpot. Game time is 5 p.m. in Bostons FleetCenter.
