CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior Blake Bellefeuille tallied two power-play goals and added one assist to lead the Eagles in a 3-2 win against Maine in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament semifinals.
With the win, BC advances to its second consecutive HOCKEY EAST championship game. The Eagles will face New Hampshire at the FleetCenter tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The HOCKEY EAST Tournament defending champion defeated Maine in last years title game, 3-2.
Before a record-setting crowd of 13,760 at the FleetCenter, BC sophomore goaltender Scott Clemmensen tied a season high with 33 saves.
The Black Bears struck first when Robert Heisten scored 2:48 into the first period. Bellefeuille notched his first power-play goal of the night at 10:49 of the opening frame to tie the score.
Boston College senior Andy Powers collected a long feed from junior Mike Mottau and chipped the puck over Maines Alfie Michaud to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage at 15:37 of the first period.
Bellfeuille tallied the lone second-period goal at 16:09. The gamewinner was Bellfeuilles 13th man-advantage tally of the season.
Maine closed the gap to one goal when Steve Kariya knocked the puck past Clemmensen with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. Clemmensen and the Eagles withstood a late Maine power play to seal the victory.
The Eagles and Wildcats have never played in the HOCKEY EAST championship game. The winner of tomorrow nights championship game will earn an automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA Tournament.
