BOSTON - Boston College sophomore forward Brian Gionta tallied two goals to lead the Eagles in a 6-4 win over Harvard in the consolation game of the 47th annual Beanpot tournament, played at the FleetCenter.
Harvard's Jeff Stonehouse opened the scoring with his goal at 3:25 of the first period. Gionta tied the game with his short-handed tally midway through the period. The Crimson regained the lead when Brian Conklin netted a goal at 14:12 of the opening stanza.
Harvard increased its lead to 3-1 when Scott Turco scored in a four-on-four situation two minutes into the second period. Junior forward Jeff Farkas brought the Eagles within one goal with his 24th tally of the season at 6:46 of the second period.
BC knotted the game late in the middle stanza when junior forward Tony Hutchins knocked a rebound into the net. The game was tied, 3-3, after 40 minutes of action.
The Eagles broke the tie when Gionta notched his second goal of the night - a power-play tally - 1:02 into the third period. BC struck again just more than a minute later when senior forward Nick Pierandri powered a shot past Harvards J.R. Prestifilippo.
The Crimson's Harry Schwefel closed the gap to one goal at 11:06 before BC senior forward Chris Masters secured the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Scott Clemmensen made 12 saves for the Eagles. Harvard's Oliver Jonas made 18 stops in his two periods of work before being relieved by Prestifilippo to start the third period. Prestifilippo made 10 saves.
The Eagles will return to HOCKEY EAST action when they face Maine on Saturday, February 13. Game time is 7 p.m. in Alfond Arena.
