CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Brian Gionta scored three goals, all in the second period, to lead Boston College to a 6-2 HOCKEY EAST win over Boston University before a crowd of 7,636 fans at Kelley Rink.
The win raised Boston Colleges record to 6-1-1, 4-1-0 in HOCKEY EAST. BC was ranked second in the nation entering the contest.
Gionta scored his first goal of the night at 5:55 of the middle period to give the host Eagles a 2-0 advantage. After Blake Bellefeuille extended BCs lead with a power-play goal and the visiting Terriers answered with two goals, Gionta regained the momentum for the Eagles with a power-play goal at 17:35 of the second period. The 5-foot-7-inch forward completed his fourth collegiate hat trick at 19:29 to give BC a 5-2 cushion.
Sophomore defenseman Bobby Allen closed the scoring with a power-play goal at 11:55 of the final period.
Gionta also tallied two assists for the Eagles to finish with five points. BC junior defenseman Mike Mottau registered four assists.
Boston University (1-6-1, 0-4-1 HOCKEY EAST) was led by sophomore Juha Vuori, who had one goal and one assist. Junior Chris Heron netted the Terriers second goal.
BC sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 23 saves, while BU senior Michel Larocque made 25 stops.
Boston College and Boston University meet in the second half of the home-and-home series on Saturday, November 21. Game time is 7 p.m. in Walter Brown Arena.

Notes:
* Brian Gionta notched his fourth career hat trick, second of the season, with three second-period goals. The last Eagle to tally three goals in a period was Blake Bellefeuille on February 28, 1997. Bellefeuille netted three third-period tallies to lead the Eagles in a 7-5 win over Northeastern.
* Gionta earned the first star with his five point performance. (3g, 2a) Mike Mottau earned the second star with his four assists. Bobby Allen completed BC's sweep of the three stars, earning the third star of the game. (1g, 2a)
* The victory was Jerry York's 543 of his career. He earned sole possesion of seventh place on the all-time winningest coaches list.
