ON THE WINNING TRACK: After losing eight consecutive games, Boston College has now won three straight contests ... The Eagles last won three straight games early in the 1997-98 season (Nov. 26 and 30, and Dec. 4). BC last won three consecutive BIG EAST (regular-season) games on Jan. 11, 13 and 21, 1997 (completing a five-game BIG EAST winning streak).
WHO'S HOT?: Freshman Brian Ross scored a career-high 20 points (6-for-10 FG, 2-for-4 treys, 6-for-9 FT) and equaled his career high with eight rebounds in the Eagles' 60-54 win over West Virginia (Feb. 6). The game marked Ross' fifth double-figure scoring effort this season ... Freshman swingman Kenny Walls, who netted a career-high 24 points in BC's 81-66 win over Seton Hall (Feb. 2), is averaging 16.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in the Eagles' last three games -- all wins. He is shooting 47.2 percent from the field in this stretch (17-for-36). He has led the team in scoring three times this season ... Junior guard Dwayne Pina handed out six assists and committed just one turnover in the win over West Virginia. He now leads the league in assist-turnover ratio (in conference games -- through games of Feb. 7), with a 2.19:1 ratio.
Scoring Mark: Walls' 24-point effort against Seton Hall is the highest scoring performance by a Boston College freshman since James "Scoonie" Penn netted 27 points -- also against Seton Hall -- on Jan. 14, 1996.
HIGH-SCORING FROSH: When Brian Ross notched 20 points against West Virginia, he became the third BC freshman this season to score 20 points in one game (joining Walls and Clinton Sims). The last time three BC freshmen enjoyed 20-point games in the same season was the 1990-91 campaign (Gerrod Abram, Bill Curley and Howard Eisley).

BOSTON COLLEGE 78, NOTRE DAME 67 (Jan. 27, 1999): In the victory over the Irish, junior Michael Cotton scored 20 points to lead four BC players in double figures ... BC committed just 11 turnovers ... BC shot 50.9 percent from the floor and 84.2 percent (16-for-19) from the foul line ... Notre Dame gained a narrow 35-31 rebounding edge ... Sophomore forward Jonathan Beerbohm recorded a career-high five blocked shots, the most shots blocked in one game by a BC player since Mickey Curley swatted five shots against Buffalo on Nov. 25, 1995 ... Junior point guard Dwayne Pina handed out six assists and committed just one turnover in 32 minutes ... BC led 40-32 at halftime, only the fourth time this season the Eagles have led at the break.
BOSTON COLLEGE 81, SETON HALL 66 (Feb. 2, 1999): In the victory over the Pirates, freshman swingman Kenny Walls registered 24 points to lead four BC players in double figures ... BC committed just 10 turnovers ... BC scored a season-high 81 points ... BC shot 54.0 percent from the floor, its second-highest percentage of the season. The Eagles shot 56.0 percent in the first half, and 52.0 percent in the second half ... Joining Walls in double digits were sophomore Kenny Harley (17 points), junior Michael Cotton (12 points) and sophomore Jonathan Beerbohm (11 points) ... Seton Hall gained a slight 31-30 rebounding edge ... BC led by 10 points twice in the first half, but Seton Hall used an 8-2 run over the half's final five minutes to trim the BC advantage to 34-33 at the break ... The Eagles began the second half with a 14-5 run to gain a 10-point lead with 13:38 remaining. The visitors never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
BOSTON COLLEGE 60, WEST VIRGINIA 54 (Feb. 6, 1999): In the victory over the Mountaineers, freshman forward Brian Ross scored a career-high 20 points and equaled his career high with eight rebounds. Joining him in double figures was freshman Kenny Walls, who finished with 10 points ... BC outrebounded WVU, 38-29 ... The Eagles committed 21 turnovers, five more than their opponent ... BC shot just 39.1 percent from the floor in the first half, but still led 23-22 at the break ... WVU outscored the home team 6-1 to open the second half to take a 28-24 advantage ... BC took the lead for good on Kenny Harley's dunk with 12:23 to play, and led by as many as nine points (five times) before the final buzzer ... BC made 45.8 percent of its field goals in the final 20 minutes, while limiting WVU to 29.0 percent shooting ... For the game, BC's defense limited WVU to 32.7 percent shooting, tying the Eagles' best field-goal percentage defense this season.
FREE THROWS: BC made 34-of-40 free-throw attempts (.850) in its wins over Notre Dame and Seton Hall ... In its win over Seton Hall, BC hit 18-of-21 attempts, its second-best effort of the year ... The Eagles shot 14-for-27 (.519) from the line against West Virginia (Feb. 6), their third-lowest shooting effort of the season. In the game against the Mountaineers, BC attempted a season-high 27 free throws.
REBOUNDING VICTORIES: Boston College outrebounded West Virginia, 38-29, on Feb. 6, 1999. The positive rebounding margin marked the fifth time this year the Eagles have won the "battle of the boards". BC has a 3-2 mark in those contests ... BC has outrebounded its foe in two of the last four games (also outrebounding Miami on Jan. 24) ... In the Eagles' first game against Connecticut this season, the Huskies gained a 32-30 edge in the rebounding department.
HIGHS AND LOWS: Boston College had its string of "low-turnover games" snapped against West Virginia. After committing just 21 turnovers in its two previous games (11 vs. Notre Dame; 10 vs. Seton Hall), BC turned the ball over 21 times in its win over West Virginia ... The WVU game marked the first time this season BC has won a game in which it committed more turnovers than its opponent ... The Eagles committed a season-low nine turnovers at Villanova (Jan. 13). The nine turnovers at Villanova marked the fewest turnovers by a BC team since the Eagles made just eight turnovers against Northwestern on Dec. 23, 1997. SHOOTING: After shooting better than 50 percent from the field in two consecutive games, Boston College shot 42.6 percent from the field against West Virginia (Feb. 6). BC atttemped a season-low 47 field goals against the Mountaineers. ... BC has made at least half its field-goal attempts in five games this season ... The Eagles enjoyed their best shooting effort of the season in their loss to Providence (Jan. 17). BC shot 56.6 percent from the field (30-for-53) against the Friars ... BC shot a season-best 62.5 percent in the second half at Seton Hall (Dec. 30).
FROM LONG RANGE: In its win over Seton Hall, Boston College tied its season high with nine (successful) three-point field goals. The Eagles also made nine treys against Miami (Jan. 24).
LEADING AT HALF: Boston College has led at halftime in each of its three BIG EAST victories ... BC has led at halftime in only six games this season, and has a 5-1 record in those contests.
FIELD GOALS: While the Eagles lost their games against Connecticut (Jan. 6), at Pittsburgh (Jan. 10) and against Miami (Jan. 24), they did not lose because of a lack of field goals. In fact, BC outscored each of these opponents from the floor. The Eagles outscored top-ranked Connecticut, 71-69, from the field (in a 91-78 loss); outscored Pittsburgh, 55-54, from the floor (in an 86-70 loss); and outscored Miami, 63-61, from the field (in a 75-67 loss).
THE SERIES VS. CONNECTICUT: Connecticut holds a 46-32 advantage in its series against Boston College, including a 26-10 edge in the BIG EAST regular-season series ... The two teams have split two BIG EAST Tournament meetings.
Streaks: Connecticut has won the last 20 meetings. BC's last win was a 64-56 victory at the Boston Garden on Feb. 23, 1988.

This Year's First Meeting: Junior forward Michael Cotton recorded career highs with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles in a 91-78 loss to Connecticut in Conte Forum (Jan. 6). Freshman Kenny Walls added 15 points -- all in the second half -- while sophomore Kenny Harley and freshman Willie Deane each scored 13 points ... Connecticut led 16-2 less than four minutes into the contest, but BC used a 20-12 run to close to within six points with 9:22 remaining in the half. UConn led 48-39 at halftime. BC shot 50.0 percent from the floor (17-for-34) in the first half ... The visiting Huskies scored the first eight points of the second half, and BC could never get closer than 12 points the rest of the way ... BC scored 39 points in each half ... BC committed six fewer turnovers than the Huskies (21-15) ... BC was 7-for-15 from three-point range, while UConn shot an ever better 9-for-15 ... UConn had a slight rebounding edge (32-30).
YOUNG GUNS: A freshman has led Boston College in scoring in 13 games. #3 MICHAEL COTTON: The junior guard from Detroit, Mich. is averaging 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in a team-high 29.3 minutes per game. In BIG EAST contests, he leads the team with a 12.5 ppg average ... Cotton has scored in double figures in seven of the last nine games, including four games with 20 or more points ... In the most recent game, he had eight points and five rebounds in a home win over West Virginia (Feb. 6) ... He netted 20 points and grabbed five rebounds in a home win over Notre Dame (Jan. 27) ... He netted a team-high 20 points (8-for-10 FG) against Providence (Jan. 17). He scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half ... Against top-ranked Connecticut (Jan. 6), he finished with 23 points and a career-high 12 rebounds ... Cotton set his career high with 24 points at Pittsburgh (Jan. 10) ... Cotton made his first (non-exhibition) collegiate appearance since the 1997 Big 12 Tournament in the Eagles' season opener against Marquette. Cotton played the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons at the University of Oklahoma, before transferring to Boston College and sitting out the 1997-98 season. #4 JONATHAN BEERBOHM: The sophomore forward has been a solid contributor for the Eagles in recent contests. He registered 11 points in each of the team's first two BIG EAST wins -- over Notre Dame (Jan. 27) and Seton Hall (Feb. 2). He shot 5-for-8 from the field in the win over Notre Dame (Jan. 27) and 5-for-9 in the win over Seton Hall (Feb. 2). He has now recorded four double-figure scoring efforts this season ... Beerbohm set his career high with five blocked shots against Notre Dame ... He tied for team-high rebounding honors -- with five -- against Seton Hall ... Most recently, he recorded four points and three rebounds in 20 minutes of action against West Virginia (Feb. 6). Prior to the game, his playing status was listed as "questionable" because of a left ankle sprain suffered toward the end of the Seton Hall game ... He played a key role in BC's win over Holy Cross (Dec. 19). He finished with 11 points, including nine straight points in the Eagles' game-breaking, 13-0 run midway through the second half ... He scored a career-high 12 points against Harvard (Nov. 18) ... The Fairbury, Neb. native equaled his career high with 11 rebounds against Monmouth (Nov. 21) ... #12 CLINTON SIMS: The freshman guard from Paris, Ky. ranks fourth on the team in scoring with a 9.6 ppg average. In 10 BIG EAST games, he is averaging 8.6 points per game ... He has led the Eagles in scoring in six games ... He matched his career high with 21 points (7-for-13 FG, 3-for-4 treys) at Seton Hall (Dec. 30) ... He also scored 21 points to lead the Eagles in a 69-56 win over Fordham at Pepsi Arena in Albany (Nov. 24). Sims shot 8-of-11 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line ... He registered 19 points (6-for-10 FG, 4-for-6 treys), five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 31 minutes of action at Miami (Dec. 8) ... He recorded nine points and six rebounds in his BIG EAST debut -- against St. John's (Dec. 5) ... He has started 17 games ... Sims is the younger brother of former Louisville star Alvin Sims.
#5 DWAYNE PINA: The junior has established himself as a team leader and a very solid BIG EAST point guard. In fact, Pina currently leads the BIG EAST in assist-turnover ratio (with a 2.19:1 ratio in league contests) ... In the team's last three games -- all wins -- Pina has registered nearly a 4:1 assist-turnover ratio (19 assists, five turnovers). He has averaged 7.3 points, 6.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game in these victories ... Over the last seven games, he has averaged 7.7 points, 5.0 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. He has shot 17-for-24 from the field, including 6-for-7 from three-point range ... The junior scored a career-high 17 points (5-for-8 FG, 3-for-3 treys) against Miami (Jan. 24) ... Most recently, Pina recorded eight points, six assists (only one turnover) and three rebounds in a home win over West Virginia (Feb. 6) ... Assist-Turnover Ratio: Dwayne Pina has handed out 87 assists, while committing just 46 turnovers (1.89:1) ... Among league leaders, he ranks fifth in the assist-turnover ratio category in all games, first in conference games only (2.19:1).
#35 WILLIE DEANE: The freshman guard is averaging 6.0 points in 16.0 minutes per game ... He has scored in double figures four times this season ... He netted five points -- all on free throws -- in the Eagles' win over Seton Hall (Feb. 2) ... Deane tallied 14 points in 22 minutes of action off the bench at Villanova (Jan. 13). He also contributed three assists and a career-high four steals ... He netted a career-high 17 points -- all in a 7:16 span in the second half -- at Pittsburgh (Jan. 10) ... In the Eagles' game against Connecticut (Jan. 6), he netted 13 points, while setting career highs with seven assists and five rebounds. He played a season-high 31 minutes ... He scored 13 points (4-for-8 FG, 4-for-5 FT) in 27 minutes against Holy Cross (Dec. 19) ... He scored nine points at Miami (Dec. 8). Deane was 4-for-8 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three-point range. #13 KENNY HARLEY: The sophomore currently ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 points per game. He also ranks third on the team in scoring in BIG EAST contests, averaging 10.9 ppg ... He has scored in double figures in nine games this season, including four of the last five games ... He equaled his BIG EAST career high with 17 points (6-for-9 FG, 3-for-4 treys) in the Eagles' home win over Seton Hall (Feb. 2) ... He registered 10 points and six rebounds in a home win over Notre Dame (Jan. 27) ... He had 16 points and six rebounds against Miami (Jan. 24) ... #21 KENNY WALLS: The freshman swingman from San Francisco, Calif. has started each of the last three games, all BC victories. He is currently tied for the team lead in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. He's scored in double figures in 11 contests, including five of the last six games ... In BIG EAST contests, Walls is averaging 11.8 points per game ... He has led (or shared the team lead) the team in rebounding a team-best seven times ... He netted a career-high 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field in BC's win over Seton Hall (Feb. 2). He scored 18 of his 24 points in the game's final 20 minutes. Most recently, Ross registered a career-high 20 points (6-for-10 FG, 2-for-4 treys, 6-for-9 FT) and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in a 60-54 home win over West Virginia (Feb. 6) ... He registered eight points (3-for-6 FG, 2-for-4 treys) and six rebounds in a win over Notre Dame (Jan. 27) ... He contributed 11 points and four rebounds against Providence (Jan. 17) ... He recorded 11 points (all in the second half), two rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of action at Villanova (Jan. 13) ... In his first collegiate start -- against Massachusetts (Dec. 12) -- he led the team in both scoring (12 points) and rebounding (8 rebounds). Both figures are career highs ... In the Eagles' game at Seton Hall (Dec. 30), he equaled his career high with 12 points (5-for-6 FG, 2-for-2 FT) ... He missed the Fairfield game (Nov. 28) because of a left eye injury (laceration) ... 1997-98: As a senior at North Quincy (Mass.) Long Range: Through games of Jan. 10 (the team's 13th game of the season), Brian Ross was 0-for-11 from three-point range. Since that time, the freshman forward has shot 7-for-15 (.467) from long range.
#31 OSEI MILLAR: The freshman forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. is averaging 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game ... Millar gave the Eagles a strong eight-minute effort at Villanova (Jan. 13), finishing with three points, two rebounds and two blocked shots ... He registered six points and a team-high five rebounds against Fairfield (Nov. 28) ... He registered four points, four rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes of action against St. John's (Dec. 5) ... Against Harvard (Nov. 18), Millar finished with nine points (4-of-8 FG) and four rebounds ... He missed the Eagles' second exhibition game (Nov. 9) because of a sprained left thumb, and the Monmouth game (Nov. 21) because of a sprained left ankle.
THE WALK-ONS: Junior Jim Boland and sophomores Julian Bah and Nicolas Dunn all earned roster spots as walk-ons prior to the 1997-98 season and are now in their second seasons with the team ... A native of Guinea, West Africa, Bah played 11 minutes in the season opener against Marquette, finishing with two points, three rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
#23 XAVIER SINGLETARY: The junior swingman from Washington, D.C. is sitting out the 1998-99 season after transferring to the Heights from Howard University. Last winter, Singletary finished as the nation's ninth-leading scorer with a 22.3 ppg average (in 23 games). He earned 1996-97 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors, and 1997-98 All-MEAC first team honors.
EARLY SIGNEES: Boston College landed two highly-touted recruits guard Troy Bell (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and forward Andrew Dudley (Bristol, Pa./Life Center Academy) during the early signing period that concluded in mid-November. Both signed national letters of intent. Bell averaged 27.8 points per game as a junior at the Academy of Holy Angels. A 6-foot-1-inch point guard, he entered his senior season as his school's career scoring leader with 1,652 points. This past summer, he traveled to several national tournaments with the Howard Pulley Panthers. Dudley, a 6-foot-10-inch forward, played the 1997-98 season at Philadelphia Christian Academy, where he averaged 12.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots per game. He played the 1996-97 season at Cornwell-Egan Catholic.
THE COACHES
THE HEAD COACH: Al Skinner assumed the head coaching duties at Boston College on April 17, 1997. Skinner, a 1974 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, had a 15-16 record in his first season at the Heights. Prior to that, he enjoyed nine successful years at the University of Rhode Island. In his tenure at URI, Skinner had a 138-126 record, leading the Rams to two NCAA Tournament (1992-93 and 1996-97) and two NIT (1991-92 and 1995-96) bids ... Including his tenure at Boston College, Skinner has a career record of 159-156.
THE ASSISTANT COACHES: Skinner is joined on the BC bench by associate head coach Tim O'Shea, assistant coaches Bill Coen and Ed Cooley; and administrative assistant Pat Duquette. Three of the four -- Coen, Cooley and former BC star guard O'Shea ('84) -- came with Skinner from Rhode Island, while Duquette came to BC from St. Michael's College.

ON RADIO: All Boston College basketball games can be heard on Boston's 50-thousand watt all-sports radio station, SportsRadio 850 WEEI (AM). Ted Sarandis returns for his fourth season as the voice of the basketball Eagles. The 1998-99 campaign marks his 22nd season describing the bouncing ball. He holds the unique distinction of having called play-by-play for all four Division I institutions in Boston -- Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern -- as well as Holy Cross. Newell is in his second season with the basketball Eagles. He previously spent four seasons calling the action for the Boston College hockey team. Newell has also served as the play-by-play voice of Harvard football.
