BOSTON (AP) - Brian Wardle had 18 points to lead Marquette to a 70-49 victory over Boston College on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
The loss ended a Boston College streak of 24 season-opening victories, while Marquette has yet to lose a season opener under fifth-year head coach Mike Deane.
Kenny Harley, the only Boston College player to score in double figures, led all scorers with 19 points. Wardle connected on all six of his shots in the first half, including two 3-pointers, to finish with 14 points at halftime.
Boston College kept it close early on, trailing 19-15 at the 10-minute mark. But Marquette went on a 22-9 run to take a 41-24 halftime lead.
Boston College cut Marquette's lead to within 13 points (45-32) with 15:45 remaining on a Clinton Sims layup. But that was as close as they would get.
The Eagles shot 21 percent overall, including 2-for-19 from 3-point range.
David Diggs chipped in with 15 points and Mike Bargen added 11 points and eight rebounds for Marquette. The win for Marquette avenges a 64-54 loss against Boston College last season in Milwaukee.
