Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener, 70-49

CHESTNUT HILL - Sophomore guard Kenny Harley scored a game-high 19 points to lead Boston College in a 70-49, season-opening loss to Marquette before a crowd of 4,326 fans at Conte Forum.
Boston College took an 11-10 lead with 12:43 remaining in the first half, before Marquette went on a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to assume control. The visiting Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 41-24 by halftime. Marquette shot 63.0 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, while the host Eagles made just 28.2 percent of their shots. Harley netted 11 points before the intermission.
In the second half, BC outscored Marquette, 8-4, in the first 4:11, before the visitors went on a 21-4 run to take a commanding 66-36 lead with 6:15 remaining on the clock.
Both defenses caused the opposition trouble in the second half. Marquette held the Eagles to 26.5 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. BC forced the visitors into 19 second-half turnovers, but were unable to convert on many of these opportunities.
Boston College returns to action on Wednesday, November 18 against Harvard. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Conte Forum.
BC Notes: Junior Michael Cotton grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 26 minutes of action in his Boston College debut. Cotton sat out the 1998-99 season after transferring to the Heights from the University of Oklahoma ... Freshman Clinton Sims netted six points in 22 minutes of action in his collegiate debut. Sims was the lone freshman starter ... Freshman Willie Deane displayed his jumping ability with a spectacular slam dunk with just more than five minutes remaining in the game.
