Boston College senior first baseman Sean McGowan (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of Major League Baseball's 1999 amateur draft. McGowan, who was the 108th overall draft selection, was the fifth player selected by the Giants. He was the only non-pitcher taken among San Francisco's first six picks.
McGowan, who earned All-BIG EAST and All-New England first team honors this spring, completed the 1999 baseball season with a .430 batting average and 25 home runs. He ranks among the nations leaders in both categories (final rankings will not be available until the conclusion of the NCAA Championships).
In addition, McGowan established Boston College single-season marks in hits, home runs and RBIs. He also holds the school's career records in these categories.
The 6-foot-6-inch senior was 77-for-179 at the plate. He registered 70 RBIs and tied for the team lead with 60 runs scored. McGowan, who also had eight doubles and two triples, finished with a team-best .916 slugging percentage. He enjoyed 25 multiple-hit games and 18 multiple-RBI games. The senior hit two home runs in six different games.
McGowan finished his collegiate career with 208 hits, 53 home runs and 184 RBIs. His career batting average was .402 (208-for-517).
In addition, senior catcher Jeff Waldron (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the draft's 18th round. Like McGowan, Waldron earned All-BIG EAST and All-New England honors in 1999.
