CHESTNUT HILL - Senior defenseman Brendan Buckley (Needham, Mass./Needham) has been elected as Boston Colleges 1998-99 ice hockey captain. Senior forward Chris Masters (Lexington, Mass./Matignon) and junior defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) were chosen as assistant captains of the 1998-99 squad.
Buckley, who served as assistant captain of the 1997-98 team, enters his final season as the Eagles most experienced player (115 career games played). He has missed just one game since arriving at Boston College in the fall of 1995. Last winter, he led the Eagles young defensive corps and tallied one goal and 12 assists.
Masters, who is one of the top face-off men in HOCKEY EAST, enters his senior season with 53 career points in 106 games. Last year, he registered 15 points in 40 games, while becoming one of the Eagles leaders in shorthanded situations.
Mottau, who led the nations defensemen in scoring last year with 49 points, captured 1997-98 Titan All-America second team honors. He played in 40 of the teams 42 games last winter, missing two contests while playing with Team USA in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland. In the Eagles post-season run, Mottau gained All-Tournament honors at the HOCKEY EAST Tournament, at the NCAA East Regional in Albany, and at the NCAA semifinals and championship game in Boston.
"I am very pleased to have these three individuals serve as our team captains this winter," Boston Colleges fifth-year head coach Jerry York said. "All three players are proven leaders - on and off the ice."
Boston College finished the 1997-98 season with a 28-9-5 record, winning the HOCKEY EAST Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournaments championship game.
The Eagles open the 1998-99 season on Friday, October 8 against Ohio State in the opening round of the Ice Breaker Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.
