Hockey Loses to Denver

DENVER -- Sophomore forward Mark Rycroft's goal 56 seconds into overtime lifted host Denver to a 4-3 victory over Boston College in the championship game of the 1998 Norwest Denver Cup at McNichols Sports Arena.
Just like the previous night, the Eagles and their opponent battled back and forth throughout the contest. Sophomore Mike Lephart gave BC a 1-0 lead at 18:12 of the opening period, converting a 4-on-4 goal. Denver evened the score on Bjorn Engstrom's goal 20 seconds later.
The Eagles (10-5-1) regained the lead at 5:52 of the second period, with sophomore defenseman Bobby Allen netting a power-play goal. The goal was Allen's fourth of the season. Once again, however, the host Pioneers tied the game. Forward Gavin Morgan netted the equalizer at 18:47 of the middle period.
Denver (9-7-0) took its first lead at 11:42 of the final period on forward Paul Veres' first goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, BC sophomore defenseman Marty Hughes evened the score with an unassisted tally, setting the stage for the overtime period.
BC sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 16 saves, while Denver's Stephen Wagner made 27 stops.
Boston College returns to action against Minnesota on Saturday, January 2. Game time is 1 p.m. in Kelley Rink.
EAGLE NOTES:
- Three BC players - juniors Jeff Farkas and Mike Mottau, and sophomore Bobby Allen earned All-Tournament honors.
- BC outshot Denver, 30-20 The Eagles netted one power-play goal (on five opportunities), while holding DU's power-play unit scoreless (also on five chances).
- Senior assistant captain Chris Masters notched two assists in the title game.
