CANTON, N.Y. - Boston College exploded for five third-period goals to erase a 2-1 deficit and gain a 6-2 win over host St. Lawrence in a non-league game at Appleton Arena.
The victory was the Eagles' second win over the Saints this season. BC also defeated St. Lawrence, 3-2, in the championship game of the IceBreaker Cup in Minneapolis, Minn. on October 10.
Down by one goal entering the final 20 minutes, the Eagles' Jeff Farkas evened the score at 1:13 of the final period, scoring off the rebound of a Brian Gionta shot. The goal was Farkas' team-high 11th of the season.
Junior forward Kevin Caulfield put BC ahead, 3-2, with a power-play goal at 4:17. Caulfield took a centering pass from linemate Tony Hutchins and beat SLU netmnder Eric Heffler. The man-advantage goal snapped St. Lawrence's streak of successful penalty kills at 46.
Gionta doubled the BC lead, also on the power play, at 5:39. The sophomore netted his 10th goal of the season, with junior Mike Mottau assisting.
At 13:01, sophomore Mike Lephart made the score 5-2, taking the puck from one end of the ice to the other to tally his first goal of the season. Mottau assisted on the score.
Senior Chris Masters, who also scored the team's first-period goal, completed the game's scoring at 16:06. The goal was Masters' sixth of the season.
St. Lawrence (6-3-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first period, before Masters evened the score. The Saints regained the advantage with a power-play goal at 10:40 of the middle stanza.
Sophomore Scott Clemmensen finished with 25 saves in the BC net. Eric Heffler made 27 saves for the Saints, before being replaced by Sean Coakley, who registered seven stops in the final 6:59.
Boston College (7-2-1, 4-2-0 HOCKEY EAST) returns to action on Saturday, November 28 at Clarkson. Game time is 7 p.m. in Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights defeated Boston University, 4-2, in a non-league game on Friday, November 27.
BC Notes:
-Chris Masters, who scored two goals against St. Lawrence in Friday's victory, notched the game-winning goal against the Saints in the Eagles' 3-2 win in the IceBreaker Cup earlier this season.
-Jeff Farkas extended his point-scoring streak to nine games with his third-period goal. Brian Gionta extended his point-scoring streak to eight games.
-BC finished the night with two power-play goals on six chances. St. Lawrence successfully converted one of its six opportunities.
-Outscoring St. Lawrence, 5-0, in the final 20 minutes, Boston College continued its dominance of the third period. BC has now outscored the opposition, 19-8, in the third period this season.
