MINNEAPOLIS - Senior assistant captain Chris Masters scored the game-winning goal with 13:03 remaining in the third period to lead Boston College to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence in the 1998 Icebreaker Cup championship game.
Masters' goal lifted the Eagles to their first regular-season tournament championship since the 1994 Beanpot. BC's other assistant captain, Mike Mottau, and junior Tony Hutchins assisted on the decisive tally.
After a scoreless first period, the Saints grabbed the lead when Al Fyfe capitalized on a BC turnover and scored his first career goal. Less than a minute later, BC junior Kevin Caulfield was credited with the equalizing goal. Caulfield's shot was redirected by a St. Lawrence defenseman and past the Saints' goaltender.
The Eagles took their first lead 31 seconds into the third period when junior Jeff Farkas placed a wrist shot into the upper-left corner of the goal. Freshman Brooks Orpik notched his first collegiate assist, while Mottau recorded his first point of the young season. Mottau led the nation's defensemen in scoring last winter with 49 points.
Fyfe took advantage of a St. Lawrence power play to tally his second goal of the game at 3:32 of the final period. Masters finished the Saints with his gamewinner just more than three minutes later.
Sophomore Scott Clemmensen made 12 saves, including a crucial glove save with five minutes remaining in the game. St. Lawrence's Eric Heffler made 28 saves en route to earning the tournament MVP honor.
BC's Gionta and Mottau earned All-Tournament honors for their play. Gionta tallied his third career hat trick in the 4-3 double overtime victory over Ohio State in the tournament's opening round. Mottau played strong defensively, while adding two assists against St. Lawrence.
The Eagles will return to the ice on Friday, October 16 in an exhibition game against the University of Toronto Blues at 7 p.m. in Kelley Rink.
