CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Walk-on running back Matt Smith (5-11, So., Finksburg, Md.) carried the ball 13 times for 42 yards and a touchdown Saturday in Boston College's first scrimmage of the 1999 spring practice season. Defensively, redshirt freshman Marco Williams recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the two-hour, 26-series scrimmage at Alumni Stadium.
Three players vying for the starting quarterback spot (juniors Tim Hasselbeck and Dave Robbins and redshirt freshman Brian St. Pierre) each got several shots to lead the offense. Hasselbeck completed 9 of 13 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown. St. Pierre completed 8 of 17 passes for 94 yards and rushed for an 18-yard touchdown. Robbins went 3-7 for 58 yards.
Smith led the BC rushers, who included Carlton Rowe (19 carries for 23 yards) and Cedric Washington (5 carries, 21 yards). Sophomore Dedrick Dewalt caught three passes for 66 yards, including the 39-yard TD reception from Hasselbeck. Redshirt freshman Jamal Burke caught the ball four times for 47 yards, while senior Derrick Crittenden caught two passes for 28 yards.
BC coach Tom O'Brien says the scrimmage left him searching for more consistency. "I thought the scrimmage was consistent with the way we have been practicing," O'Brien says. "There were too many ups and downs. We were good one play, then bad the next. We have a long way to go with this football team. The ball was on the ground too much today, there were too many fumbles. We need to be more consistent."
