Cowgirls Face Shockers in Non-Conference Battle
June 21, 1999 | Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team, ranked 10th in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll, will travel to Wichita, Kan., Thursday afternoon for doubleheader action with the Wichita State Shockers. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Oklahoma State (23-7) is coming off a disappointing Kia Klassic last weekend where the Cowgirls went 1-4. OSU is looking to break a three-game losing streak, and already has one win over the Shockers this season, a 6-1 victory in the OSU Cowgirl Spring Classic.
"We're a lot better team than we showed last weekend," said OSU Coach Margaret Rebenar. "We've still got a few kids coming off injuries, but I think that by the end of this week, we'll have them back for sure."
The Cowgirls will be without the services of pitcher Leanne Tyler, who will be returning to Stillwater late Thursday night after spending the last week with the Australian National Team. The starting pitchers for Oklahoma State on Thursday night will be Amy Lopez (6-3) in the first game and Sheryl Anderson (3- 0) in the second.
"Wichita State is a very important series for us," said Rebenar. "Even though they're not in our conference, it's just as important as a conference game for us, because they're in our region. It will determine how we're ranking regionally at the end of the season."
Following the WSU doubleheader, Oklahoma State will take five days off before opening conference play with bedlam-rival Oklahoma on Wednesday, April 1, at Cowgirl Field in Stillwater. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in that game.
