Boston College sophomore forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) will be presented the prestigious Bob Johnson Award from USA Hockey at the organization's President's Awards Banquet on June 12 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Bob Johnson Award, created in 1992 and presented by Bauer, recognizes excellence in international ice hockey competition during a specific season. USA Hockey's International Council selects the winner(s), which is named in honor of the late Bob Johnson, who served as executive director of USA Hockey from 1987-90.
Gionta, who earned 1998-99 Titan All-America first team honors, registered 60 points in 39 games for Boston College this past winter. He ranked eighth in the nation in scoring, and was tied for sixth with 27 goals. He also earned All-New England and All-HOCKEY EAST first team accolades.
He missed four Boston College games while playing for the U.S. National Junior Team in the 1999 IIHF World Junior Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He registered 11 points - six goals and five assists - in six games, leading all tournament scorers. His six goals tied for the tournament high and represented nearly one-fourth of Team USA's total output.
