BOSTON (AP) - Mike Beam nailed a 3-point shot as time expired Wednesday night to lift Harvard to a season-opening 62-61 win over Boston College, sending the Eagles to consecutive season-opening home losses for the first time in 35 years.
Beam paced the Crimson with 12 points and Tim Hill had 11.
Clinton Sims had a team-leading 15 points for the Eagles (0-2), who suffered a 70-49 loss against Marquette on Saturday. BC last lost its first two home games in 1963 when Bob Cousy was the school's head coach.
The Eagles led 59-51 with 2 1/2 minutes left, but Harvard closed the gap to 60-59 on Dan Clemente's 3-pointer with nine seconds left.
After John Beerbohm hit the first of two free throws with 6.8 seconds to play, the Crimson grabbed the missed free throw and moved it across midcourt before Beam nailed his game-winner from the left wing as the horn sounded.
Harvard's only lead was 2-0.
BC led 44-33 midway into the second half before the Crimson went on a 16-7 run to close the margin to 51-49 on Hill's basket with just over five minutes left.
The Eagles led 34-24 at intermission.
