CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Eighteen BIG EAST games and contests against local rivals Harvard, UMass and Holy Cross highlight Boston Colleges 1998-99 mens basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo.
"This schedule, particularly the BIG EAST portion, presents a real challenge for Coach (Al) Skinner and our team," DeFilippo said. "In addition to our traditional conference rivals, we think we have scheduled some quality non-conference opponents to test our young team and provide exiciting games for our fans."
After two early November exhibition contests, the Eagles will open their season against Marquette in Conte Forum on November 14. Marquette is the first of five Jesuit institutions BC will play this season. In addition, second-year head coach Al Skinners team will meet Fairfield (Nov. 28), Fordham (Nov. 24), Georgetown (Feb. 17) and Holy Cross (Dec. 19).
Boston College will host St. Johns in its BIG EAST opener on December 5. St. Johns returns three starters from last years team that won 22 games and earned a NCAA Tournament berth.
BC and UMass will meet on December 12 at the Worcester Centrum. The game will mark the third consecutive season in which the schools have met on the hardwood.
Other games of note include a November 18 home game against Harvard and a December 23 road contest against Big 10 member Northwestern.
