Women's BAsketball Defeats Villanova, 65-55

CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- The Boston College women?s basketball team defeated Villanova, 65-55, in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams at Conte Forum tonight. Sophomore forward Becky Gottstein led the Eagles with 23 points and 15 rebounds, and senior guard Cal Bouchard added 14 points in the win. Gottstein registered her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season.
Gottstein led the Eagles in the first half, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Brianne Stepherson?s three-point field goal gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead, but Villanova rallied with a 7-0 run. The Eagles regained the lead on Bouchard?s layup at the 11:44 mark, and extended their lead to eight points. Boston College led 20-12 with 6:39 remaining in the half. Villanova cut the lead to five points twice, but a layup by Gottstein and a jumper by Bouchard gave the Eagles a 27-20 lead at intermission.
Villanova opened the second half with a 9-2 run and tied the game at 29-29 on a Lauren Pellicane jumper. The Eagles held a three-point lead with 14:06 left in the game, but Nicole Druckenmiller hit two three-point field goals in the Wildcats? 12-2 run to give Villanova a 45-38 lead. Boston College rallied over the next two minutes and Gottstein?s jumper at the 9:08 mark gave the Eagles? a 46-45 lead. Junior guard Danielle O?Banion provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight points in the final 15 minutes to secure the victory for the Eagles.
Three players scored in double figures for Villanova, led by Trish Juhline?s 15 points on five three-point field goals. Jenea Skeeters scored all of her 12 points in the second half, and Druckenmiller added 13.
Villanova dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, and Boston College improved to 6-3 and 1-0 in the league. The Eagles host Dartmouth on Sunday, December 12 at 2:00 p.m. Villanova hosts St. Joseph?s on Saturday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m.
