CHESTNUT HILL - Senior forward Tony Hutchins scored two goals and freshman Tim Kelleher made 21 saves to lead Boston College to a 4-0 HOCKEY EAST win over Merrimack before a crowd of 4,256 in Kelley Rink.
The shutout was the first of Kelleher?s young career and BC?s first shutout since defeating UMass-Lowell, 5-0, in the quarterfinal round of the HOCKEY EAST Tournament on March 11, 1999. The game was Kelleher?s fifth collegiate appearance.
Hutchins scored one goal in each of the first two periods to give the host Eagles a 2-0 advantage entering the final 20 minutes. His first goal came at 5:18, with junior defenseman Rob Scuderi and senior forward Kevin Caulfield assisting. He netted his second goal at 2:15 of the second period. Sophomore forward Ales Dolinar and Caulfield assisted. The game marked Hutchins? second collegiate two-goal game. His first came in a 3-3 tie at Boston University on Dec. 9, 1997.
Junior forward Brian Gionta increased the BC lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at 9:24 of the third period. Sophomore Jeff Giuliano finished the scoring at 12:29.
Boston College (7-5-0) outshot the Warriors, 40-21.
Merrimack junior Tom Welby made 35 saves and allowed four goals in 52:29. Sophomore Jason Wolfe played the final 7:31 and made one stop. Just 18 days ago, Welby made 36 saves and blanked BC, 2-0, at the Volpe Complex for his first career shutout.
BC freshman forward Krys Kolanos tallied two assists for his second consecutive multiple-point game and the third in his 12-game career.
The game marked the third and final regular-season meeting between the two teams. BC won the season series, 2-1.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, December 10 against Harvard. Game time is 7 p.m. in Kelley Rink.
