Dec. 6, 1999
Freshman guard Troy Bell has been selected as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5, according to an announcement made by the league office.
Bell averaged 25.5 points per game in the Eagles? two games between Nov. 29-Dec. 5. On Nov. 29, the freshman netted 22 points in a 104-62 home win over Hartford. In that game, Bell shot 6-for-7 from the field, including 5-for-5 from three-point range. On Dec. 4, Bell registered a career-high 29 points in the Eagles? 74-67 home loss to Massachusetts. He shot 7-for-13 from the floor, 3-for-4 from three-point range, and 12-for-14 from the foul line.
Bell?s 12-for-14 effort from the free-throw line against Massachusetts marked the first time a BC player had made (at least) 12 free throws in one game since Danya Abrams sank 12 (of 19) against Pittsburgh on March 6, 1997.
Through five games, Bell is averaging 20.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 50.0 percent (28-for-56) from the floor, an amazing 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from three-point range, and 91.2 percent (31-for-34) from the foul line. He has scored more than 20 points in three of his first five collegiate contests. His 20.4 ppg average marks the first time a BC player has averaged more than 20.0 ppg through five games since Danya Abrams was scoring at a 20.2 ppg clip at the same point during the 1995-96 season.
Bell currently ranks among BIG EAST leaders in five categories. He ranks first in both three-point field goals made and three-point field-goal percentage, second in free-throw percentage and scoring, and 13th in field-goal percentage.
Boston College (3-2) returns to action against Holy Cross on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Game time is 7:50 p.m. in the Centrum in Worcester, Mass.
