CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College defeated the University of Maine, 81-54, last night in the first round of the State Farm Classic behind a team-high 22 points from senior Alissa Murphy. The game was played at the University of Florida.
Boston College jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead to open the game on a Jamie Cournoyer jumper. The Eagles continued to build their lead and reached 10 points on two Becky Gottstein free throws. The Eagles continued to play solid defense and held the Black Bears without a field goal in the final nine minutes of the first half, going on a 21-5 run, keyed by eight points by senior captain Cal Bouchard on two three pointers and two free throws. Boston College ended the half with a 41-17 advantage.
Maine began the second half with a 5-0 run and soon cut the Boston College lead to 14 at the 13:20 mark, closest they would come to the Eagles for the rest of the game. Jamie Cassidy supplied the offense in the Black Bear's attack as she tallied 13 points as the teams came back from the intermission. The Eagles went on a 9-2 run and at the 9:53 mark, Bouchard's jumper brought the lead back to 21 points.
In the games final minutes, Murphy chipped in five points on a three pointer and two free throws and junior Danielle O'Banion hit a three pointer to close the game.
After Murphy's 22 points, Gottstein chipped in 18 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds. Bouchard added 14 points for the Eagles. Maine was led by Cassidy's 16 points (13 in the second half) and Kristen McCormic's 10 points. Kizzy Lopez led the Black Bears with 9 rebounds.
With the win, Boston College moves to 10-3 on the season and 1-0 in the BIG EAST, while Maine dropped to 5-6. Boston College next plays Florida in the championship game of the State Farm Classic at 7:00 p.m. on December 29 following Maine's game against Western Kentucky in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m.
