Orpik Selected To U.S. National Junior Hockey Team

CHESTNUT HILL - Boston College sophomore defenseman Brooks Orpik has been selected to the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2000 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden.
The tournament, featuring the top players under 20 years old, will be played from Dec. 25-Jan. 4 in Skelleftea and Umea, Sweden.
The U.S. team will assemble in West Point, N.Y. on Dec. 13. The team then travels to Sweden for exhibition games on Dec. 20 and 22, before beginning competition at the World Junior Championship on Dec. 26.
Orpik is the lone BC representative on the U.S. team. Four of his BC teammates ? Blake Bellefeuille, Jeff Farkas, Brian Gionta and Mike Mottau ? have participated in previous World Junior tournaments. Bellefeuille played in 1997, Farkas played in 1996, 1997 and 1998, Gionta played in 1998 and 1999, and Mottau played in 1998.
Orpik will miss three Boston College games while competing in the World Junior Championship. The sophomore defenseman will miss the Eagles? two games in the Vermont Hockey Classic (Dec. 29 and 30) and one home game against Brown (Jan. 2).
