CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Junior Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) totaled a career-high 24 kills as the Eagles fell 3-1 (15-9, 10-15, 15-9, 15-12) to BIG EAST foe Providence College Friday in Chestnut Hill. BC dropped to 12-15 on the year and 3-6 in the conference while the Friars' win gave them a 14-10 record overall and 6-3 mark in the loop.
Sprinkel's personal best offensive production at BC included only five errors in 45 attempts. She served three aces as well as making four blocks.
Both Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Rachel Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles) collected 10 kills each. Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), who tied a career high with 22 digs, led all Eagles defensively. El-Hag added 21 digs of her own for her ninth double-double of the season. Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) made 51 assists and served for two aces.
PU's Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) had 20 kills and 20 digs, and teammate Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) had 12 kills and 16 digs. Heidi Filippi (Wooster, Ohio) made 19 digs, and setter Colleen Lee (Tonawanda, N.Y.) totaled 36 assists in the match victory.
After falling four points behind, the Eagles regrouped to knot game one at six with strong serving by Mary Fitterer (Puyallup, Wash./Fife), whose 16 digs tonight was a career best. Although, Katinger's stint behind the line for the Friars instigated four more Friar points. The final score was PU 15-9.
Providence jumped out to 5-0 lead in the game two. For the second time in as many games, BC vaporized a large disadvantage and evened the score at six apiece. Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat), who was honored on Senior Night, served BC to five straight points and a 12-7 lead. On the third game- point opportunity, BC pulled out the 15-10 decision.
Providence took off to a 9-3 lead in the third game en route to a 15-9 win. Cella's two service aces at 12-9 and 13-9 helped to close out the victory.
At one point, the Friars held a 13-3 advantage in the fourth game until the Eagles climbed back via Sprinkel's terminating power and solid defense. Sprinkel served BC to three points (14-9) as did Charlton. BC fought off two game points before falling 12-15.
BC hosts Sacred Heart Wednesday (Nov. 10) for its last regular season home game of 1999. Game time is at 8 p.m.
