BOSTON (AP) - Freshman guard Troy Bell scored 27 points and backcourt mate Xavier Singletary had 20 as Boston College coasted to a 91-63 win over Vermont on Tuesday night.
Bell's total was the most by a Boston College freshman since Gerrod Abrams scored 30 on December 3, 1990 against Maryland.
Brian Ross added 14 points for the Eagles (2-0). Tony Orciari paced the Catamounts (0-3) with 12 points.
It was just the fifth meeting ever between the schools, the first since 1981.
The Eagles, who never trailed, scored nine of the game's first 11 points and pushed their lead to 25-14 on Bell's 3-pointer 7:07 into the contest. Bell connected on 5-of-6 3-pointers in the game, including all three attempts in the first half.
The Catamounts cut the margin below double digits (27-19) before BC went on a 6-0 spurt en route to a 44-33 edge at intermission.
In the second half, Vermont sliced it to 50-45 on David Roach's basket. Bell then scored the next seven points in a 79-second span, hitting two jumpers before a 3-pointer to move the Eagles advantage to 57-45.
After a pair of baskets by the Catamounts, BC put the game away with an 11-0 run in just under three minutes to make it 68-49. Singletary scored four points and Bell hit a 3-pointer during the spree.
Vermont's first win will be coach Tom Brennan's 200th of his career.
