Women's Cross Country Competes at NCAA Championship

Senior Shannon Smith capped her cross country career at Boston College by running to a 51st-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championship hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Her time of 17:38 led the Eagle competitors.
Sophomore Nicole Portley was the second BC runner to finish. Her time of 18:23 was enough to give her a 164th-place run. Teammates freshman Cate Guiney and junior Lisa McIsaac followed shortly behind Portley, taking 167th and 168th-place finishes, respectively. They ran the 5K course in 18:25 and 18:26.
Freshman Maggie Guiney ran to a 220th-place finish in a time of 19:00. The final two runners came in 246th and 247th. Senior Kyla Barbour ran a 19:56 race and freshman Meghan Andrade ran a 20:09.
As a team, Boston College placed 28th out of the 31 competing teams. The seven runner had a combined average time of 18:22.
The 1999 NCAA Championship marked the close of both Smith and Barbour's cross country careers at BC. While at the Heights, both qualified for the NCAA race three times in their four year careers. Smith earned All-America honors in 1997 and also won the New England Championship and placed 10th at the 1999 BIG EAST Championship to earn all-conference honors.
