Hockey Loses to Northeastern, 6-5

BOSTON - Northeastern sophomore Leon Hayward?s goal at 13:21 of the third period thwarted a furious Boston College comeback and lifted the host Huskies to a 6-5 HOCKEY EAST victory before a crowd of 3,454 at Matthews Arena.
Boston College trailed 5-2 just two minutes into the third period, before scoring three goals in just 4:41 to even the score at 5-5 midway through the period. The Eagles capitalized on two NU penalties to climb back into the contest. With a two-man advantage, junior Brian Gionta scored his third goal of the season ? at 4:43 -- to cut the BC deficit to two goals. At 6:09, while the Eagles still enjoyed a one-man advantage, junior Mike Lephart netted his second goal of the night to pull BC to within one at 5-4. Sophomore defenseman Brooks Orpik evened the score at 9:24.
Boston College (5-2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore Ales Dolinar, playing on a line with senior Blake Bellefeuille and Gionta, opened the scoring at 4:16. Lephart doubled the BC lead at 15:49. Sophomore Jeff Giuliano and senior Jeff Farkas assisted on Lephart's goal. Farkas? assist extend his point-scoring streak to seven games.
Northeastern, however, scored the game?s next five goals to gain control. The Huskies? Graig Mischler scored a power-play goal at 17:57 of the first period to bring his team within one at 2-1. NU scored three unanswered goals in the second period, and raised its lead to 5-2 with a goal at 1:58 of the middle stanza.
Northeastern (3-3-1) outshot Boston College, 38-20, including a 17-5 advantage in the second period.
BC freshman Tim Kelleher finished with 32 saves. NU freshman Mike Gilhooly made 15 stops.
Boston College hosts Maine in Kelley Rink on Sunday, Nov. 14. Game time is 2 p.m.
