CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - For the second time this season, the University of New Hampshire volleyball team came out on top, defeating Boston College 3-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-13) Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. UNH climbed to 10-8 overall while BC, after upsetting BIG EAST powerhouse Connecticut Sunday (Oct. 3), fell to 6-10 on the year.
Bethany Cole (Canterbury, N.H.) led all game attackers with 13 kills and only one error in 21 attempts in addition to four blocks. Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.) set up 27 kills for the Wildcats. UNH was led defensively by Kim Mirts-Poen (Essex, Iowa) with her 13 digs while Katie Jentes (Madbury, N.H.) and Leisha Campbell (Oswego, N.Y.) collected nine each.
Three Eagle attackers put forth seven-kill efforts including Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers). Co-captains Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) and Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) each posted four blocks. Charlton, who is also the team's setter, made 24 assists on the night. Schwer and Delong recorded 11 and seven digs, respectively to lead the Eagles.
The Wildcats' Carrie Brandon (Midland, Mich.) served to break a 3-3 tie in the first game, propelling UNH to six consecutive points before Brooke Shull's (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) kill caused a BC sideout. The Eagles climbed within one (11-10) with Lauren Schwer's leadership behind the service line but could only gain two more points before falling 15-11.
UNH ripped off seven consecutive points in game two on Barnett's serve. After surrendering one point, the Eagles tallied the game's next six points, closing the deficit to two at 6-8. UNH retained control though, not allowing any more BC points as it closed out the win at 15-8.
Trailing most of the way in the third, UNH slowly pecked away at a 10-point disadvantage to win the game 15-13 and match 3-0.
BC travels to BIG EAST opponents Villanova Saturday (Oct. 9) for a 1 p.m. game then meets Georgetown the next day. Game time is at 5 p.m.
