CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College completed its sixth sweep of the season and third BIG EAST conference win, defeating Syracuse 3-0 (15-9, 15-9, 15-8) Sunday in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles improved to 11-14 and 3-5 in the conference while the Orangewomen dropped to 17-11 overall and 4-4 in the loop.
Kristin Sprinkel (Laguna, Calif./Bishop Luers) registered 11 kills in the three-game victory with only one error in 23 attempts and six blocks. The junior outside hitter has now posted double-digit kill totals in 11 matches this season. Freshman Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) recorded nine kills and no errors as well as a team-leading 15 digs. Rachel Bach (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles) and Julia El-Hag (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) each had eight kills on the day. El-Hag also posted 11 digs. In addition to her 40 assists, Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) accumulated 14 digs. Mary Fitterer (Puyallup, Wash./Fife) made 11 digs and added a rare kill.
Syracuse was led by Sarah Simmons' (Avon Lake, Ohio) 10-kill performance. Setter Noreen Carroll (LaGrange, Ill.) had 32 helpers in the loss while Rachel Watson (Kailua, Hawaii) totaled 24 of SU's 62 digs.
BC built upon a 2-0 lead in the first game with six straight points thanks to two kills by Sprinkel, and Schwer's service ace. Julianna Stokes (Naperville, Ill.) served the Orangewomen to three points (8-3) before conceding a BC sideout. Two kills by Sprinkel and El-Hag each solidified a 12-3 advantage. After many service exchanges, the Eagles finally triumphed in a 15-9 decision.
With Schwer behind the line in game two, Boston College jumped out to a 4-0 lead, care of Charlton and El-Hag's kills. Fitterer's service stint saw BC earn three more points, including her own kill to make the score 12-4. SU cut the lead in half at 12-8 and fought off two game points before surrendering the 15-9 loss.
For the second straight game BC started hot, tearing off four unanswered points (4-0). Setter Noreen Carroll propelled Syracuse to within two points at 8-6. Schwer's kill gave BC the sideout, and Sprinkel's block helped BC to a 10-6 lead. Sprinkel's service, including one ace, provided two points and the match win at 15-9.
BC travels to Central Connecticut State Wednesday (Nov. 3) Game time is at 6 p.m.
