MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Senior wing Nate Miller scored at 3:13 of overtime to lift Minnesota to a 6-5 victory over top-ranked Boston College in front of 9,634 fans at Mariucci Arena.
Miller?s goal thwarted the Eagles? dramatic rally from a 4-0 second-period deficit. BC tallied three consecutive goals -- from the middle of the second period to early in the third period -- to trim the UM margin to one goal. The host Gophers answered midway through the third period to make the score, 5-3.
Senior Jeff Farkas netted his seventh goal of the season at 16:05 of the final period to bring the Eagles back within one goal. Junior defenseman Bobby Allen then evened the score with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation. Allen?s goal came with BC enjoying a 6-on-4 advantage. Junior goaltender Scott Clemmensen had been pulled from the net 18 seconds earlier.
Trailing 4-0, BC sophomore Jeff Giuliano netted a shorthanded goal and junior Mark McLennan scored his first collegiate goal to make the score, 4-2, after two periods. Senior Blake Bellefeuille?s power-play goal at 5:18 of the third cut the UM lead to 4-3.
Boston College outshot Minnesota, 35-27. The Golden Gophers enjoyed an 11-8 first-period shot advantage, before the Eagles nearly doubled (26-14) the home team?s shot total over the final two regulation periods.
Clemmensen registered 21 saves, while UM?s Adam Hauser made 30 stops.
Now 3-1-0 overall, the Eagles will conclude their stay in the Twin Cities with a 7 p.m. (8 p.m. Eastern) rematch with the Gophers on Saturday, October 30.
