Volleyball Falls To Rutgers In Three Games

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Rutgers University defeated Boston College 3-0 (18-16, 15-1, 15-9) in front of 150 people at Power Gym Friday night in Chestnut Hill. The Scarlet Knights won their fourth of five matches against BIG EAST opponents and improved to 11-11. BC fell to 10-12 and 2-3 in the conference.
Rutgers was led by Cheri Drake (Cortland, N.Y.) with 16 kills. Teammates Lola Opadiran (Brampton, Ontario) and Kera Carter (Toronto, Ontario) followed with 15 and 14 kills, respectively in addition to a 15-dig performance for both. Pualani Tuyay (San Diego, Calif.) posted 45 assists for the win.
BC, which won five of seven matches entering tonight's game, was led by Julia El-Hag's (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) 10-kill performance. The junior outside hitter also registered 17 digs and three blocks on the night. Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) posted eight kills for the Eagles, and setter Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) totaled 33 helpers.
The Eagles took off to a 12-6 lead in the first game via well-placed kills and solid serving. Rutgers regrouped and crept close on Opadiran's stint behind the line which saw the Scarlet Knights score four points, making the score12-11, Rutgers' disadvantage. BC went ahead 14-12 but Rutgers came back with Mary Kiriakou (Toronto, Ontario) serving to a game-point chance at 15-14. BC accomplished a sideout and created two more game points of their own before conceding the 18-16 loss.
Each team served four times when Rutgers led 3-1 before the visitors mounded a six-point run giving them the 13-1 advantage on Megan Edwards (Honolulu, Hawaii) serve. They won that game 15-1.
After jumping out to a 2-0 start, BC trailed most of game three until the Eagles knotted the game at five with Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) serving. Kera Carter served Rutgers to a 9-6 advantage. The Scarlet Knights won the final game 15-9 for the match victory.
BIG EAST play continues at Power Gym when BC hosts Seton Hall Sunday Oct. 24. Game time is at 2 p.m.
