CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - St. John's University took three straight from host Boston College in a heated battle between BIG EAST conference squads Saturday in Chestnut Hill. St. John's won both teams' conference season-opener, 3-0 (15-12, 15-9, 16-14), to move to 10-6 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST while the Eagles fell to 5-9 on the year and 0-1 in the loop.
Two Red Storm attackers collected kill totals in the double digits. Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill.) and Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, NY) recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively. In addition, Mercein topped St. John's defensively with her 19 digs in the three-game match. Stasha Levi (Gillette, Wyo.) posted 35 assists for the win.
For the third consecutive match, Lauren Schwer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) accumulated 10-plus kills, adding another 10-kill performance against the Red Storm Saturday. She was also among BC's defensive leaders, tallying 15 digs on the night. Other Eagles helping out BC's defensive cause were Julia El-Hag (Bedford, NY/Fox Lane) with a team-leading 16 digs and Mary Fitterer (Puyallup, Wash./Fife), who had 13 digs. Setter Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Name) made 33 assists.
St. John's erased an eight-point deficit to win the first game 15-12 then rode the momentum into the early stages of game two, leading 5-0. Fitterer served the Eagles to four points and a 6-7 disadvantage but the Eagles would get no closer, falling 9-15 in the second.
The Red Storm charged to a 6-1 lead in the final game. With co-captain Laura DeLong (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) behind the line, BC tied the score at 10. The score would flip-flop four more times, including a Schwer kill that led to a BC game-point serve, before SJU's eventual match-winning 16th point.
BIG EAST play continues Sunday (Oct. 3) at the Heights when BC welcomes Connecticut at 7 p.m.
